6th graders from Nathan Hale School in New Haven
had a great time on November's "Tour of My Brother Sam is
Dead" field trip.
Here quotes from several letters the 6th graders
forwarded after the field trip:
"My favorite part of the whole tour was
when we ran through the fields. I liked this part because
we got to feel how it was like to be Sam and Tim Meeker running
through the fields. Another reason I liked this part was because
it was kind of a challenge for us but it was fun."
"What I learned while on this trip was
more about the characters, for example they said in the book
that Jerry was a 10 year old boy but he was really 19 and
we learned more about the huts they (the soldiers) slept in.
Also I saw what we read in the book. I thought that was very
cool!!"
"What I learned about was General Putnam's
escape from the British. I never knew about this and it was
such a joy to learn about it. Every time I have a flash back
of when we were at the tour of Redding I can picture General
Putnam on his horse escaping...I really loved this field trip
and would love to do this again."
"That was the [best] field trip I ever had about
History…"
"My favorite part was the museum and (seeing)
the Brown Bess."
"I was always wondering what the Brown
Bess looked like and now I know thanks to you. Thank you very
much for giving us this tour. I am very thankful and I appreciated
it. You taught me a lot of things I was curious to know. I
loved this field trip. And again, you did a wonderful job."
"I would never think that Connecticut would
have that much interesting history! Thank you so much for
taking us through Redding, showing us the great locations
from My Brother Sam is Dead and answering our questions."
"One of my favorite parts of the trip to Redding
was when we got to hear of what happened and where in the
book."
"My favorite part was when I got to run
in the field where Sam was chasing Tim for the Brown Bess."
"On the field trip I learned how the British
tried to capture General Putnam while he was shaving. This
was really interesting because I never knew that the British
actually tried to capture soldiers like that. Also it stuck
in my mind because if I forget about it I think of the statue
and remember."
"That was the best field trip I had this year!
The parts I liked the best were when you showed us where the
tavern was, where the Meeker family's graves were, and the
field where Sam ran across after he took the Brown Bess. I
wish I could run across that field just like Sam did."
"I had so much fun, especially when you showed
us the graves at Redding Ridge. I never knew Tim and Sam were
fictional. It's so surprising that I never knew how involved
Danbury was [in the Revolution], yet I lived there for so
long."
"Thank you for making the history come alive,
I had a great time. Hope you do more fun things with other
kids, I bet they will have a great time."
"Thank you for taking us on the field trip, telling
us about the history of Redding. I would also like to thank
you for helping us imagine "My Brother Sam is Dead"
better because now it is easier for me to see certain scenes."
